Picó - Sound System Culture from the Colombian Caribbean
Earlier this year we declared that if Strut put out another DJ curated release we’d be all over it. So, well, here we are. This one comes from Berlin based Colombian DJ, Edna Martinez. The Picó records arrived at our roastery a couple of weeks ago and we have been listening to it on a near daily basis in the cupping lab while doing quality control. Probably one of the reasons quality has been up recently! I must have listened to it 20 times before finally reading the story on the insert by Edna Martinez tonight before writing this blurb.. Predictably, the songs are even better after getting a little background on picó culture. While listening, picture the music blaring out of custom sound systems to a community gathering of neighbors drinking and dancing in the steamy Caribbean heat. It’s so good.
Astrid Medina - Tolima, Colombia
This coffee comes from one of our all time favorite producers, Astrid Medina. She is the coolest. We've been buying her coffee for a long time, but we're always excited to taste her coffees when her main crop comes around. This lot is a field blend and has a nice nutty sweetness and complexity that we've come to expect from Finca Buena Vista. Astrid's attention to detail during both growth and harvest means that this coffee is clean, and features characteristics that sometimes make us think of Kenyan coffees mixed with some Colombian savory qualities.
