September paired Street Candy - a 35mm black and white film that was originally intended for ATM surveillance cameras with a honey processed SL-28 from Finca Sabana Redonda in Los Ángeles, Costa Rica that is intense, complex and juicy. 

The zine (and this here blog post) featured Deering Oaks Park Tennis Courts by @iansfilm, a fenced honeybee by @kerry_constantino_photography, and Mackworth Island in Lomochrome Purple by @viewconstrued.

For August we paired Retrochrome from @filmphotographyproject with Wilmar Guarnizo’s honey processed caturra. The film is “reminiscent old @natgeo photos” while the coffee has “all the fruit characteristics while still being squeaky clean.”

The zine also featured a conversation between James Joiner and Dominick Lewis aka Photodom, an artist and photographer from Brooklyn, New York. 

"I first got into photography shortly after high school. I bought a Nikon D3200 as a graduation gift for myself and instantly fell in love with the camera. I went to college for two years on an NROTC scholarship studying electrical engineering at Drexel University and dropped out at 20 to become a photographer full time. I told myself I would never settle for nothing less than exactly what I want, and here I am today."

Dominick has a fundraiser in the works with plans to open the first Black-owned, brick-and-mortar camera store in Brooklyn—one of only a handful in the country. Learn more about it and pitch in.

For July 2020 James paired Purple film from @lomography with our Pantan Musara from Aceh, Sumatra. Purple film twists colors into an “altogether beautiful psychedelic fever dream” while Pantan Musara “will make you question everything you thought you knew about Sumatran coffee.”

We first met James Joiner over a mutual love of coffee. He had reached out to us about collaborating on a project because he’d been using our instant coffee to develop his black and white film. While we know our instant coffee is endlessly useful and handy, we had no idea that you could also use it to expose film! We soon bonded over much more than coffee and film - kids, music, and 1% for the Planet (of which we’re both members). Over a series of conversations during quarantine, the idea for a coffee and film club was born!

Here’s how it works - each month members will be exposed to an 8oz bag of off-menu, small-lot coffee curated by Tandem, paired with a roll of 35mm film and a ‘zine full of pictures taken by fellow members curated by James Joiner.

Double Exposure will ship out the week the 15th of each month.
