For the past couple years, we have visited the Beneficio Bella Vista in Antigua, Guatemala each winter to cup coffees, visit farms, and meet with the producers. Each year we return so impressed by the craftsmanship, passion, and dedication of the staff of Bella Vista and the farmers that they work with. It’s quite an operation, and the coffees that we have received from Bella Vista have been outstanding and, frankly, get even better each year. This year we decided to buy almost twice as much coffee from Bella Vista than last year, which was lucky because there were so many special coffees on the cupping table. Santa Anita is the first coffee available this year that we selected straight from Bella Vista on our cupping trip. Santa Anita is owned by three brothers, Luis Felipe, Jorge, and Leonel Benavente and is located in Patzun, in Chimaltenengo. The brothers have 20 of their 45 ha farm at 1805 masl planted in Bourbon, Tequisik, Caturra, and Villasarchi. While the family has owned the property for more than 60 years, it has only been in the last 3 or so years that the brothers have begun seeking guidance to improve the quality and production of their coffee and since that time the coffee quality has improved significantly. The brothers wet mill and dry their own coffee on the farm and then transport it to Bella Vista for dry milling. And boy oh boy is it GOOD: super juicy and sweet with notes of cooked fruit, tropical fruits, and rich brown butter.
