We couldn’t ask for a better way to close out the lineup of last year’s Kenyas. It’s been a truly great run, so it is fitting that we are wrapping it up with a coffee as juicy, complex, and vibrant as this AA lot from the Kathakwa Coffee Factory. Kathakwa is in Embu county, in Kiambu. Over 1000 farmers sell their cherry to this factory; the cherries are pulped using a three disc pulper, fermented overnight, washed and density sorted in channels, and finally soaked for an additional 12-24 hours before drying. This involves a lot of water—coffee processing can be a pretty water-intensive process, and the water that is used in processing can be damaging to the environment if not adequately treated. Fortunately, the Kathakwa Coffee Factory has done a great job addressing this issue on site. They have built 8 soaking pits where their wastewater is filtered naturally before being returned to the environment, so they can minimize the runoff of excess nutrients or bacteria from the facility to the nearby Kii river. That rules!
All of our coffees are roasted to order and shipped as whole beans. We roast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and ship out the following day. Orders are roasted based on demand. Thanks!
