Working with Kamavindi Coffee Lab has connected us with a number of extraordinary Kenyan producers whose coffees and stories we are excited to share throughout the summer.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePeter is a coffee producer, exporter, educator, and a linchpin of the Kenyan coffee community. We visited him and his family in \u003cstrong\u003eEmbu\u003c\/strong\u003e twice this season — once ahead of harvest and again just after — to build on the work of the \u003cstrong\u003eRetro 1984 Coffee Project\u003c\/strong\u003e, a sourcing effort begun by our friends at \u003cstrong\u003eSey Coffee\u003c\/strong\u003e. That project sought a renewed focus on traditional processing practices and classic Kenyan varieties, and the coffees we purchased this year continue that work. We’re thrilled to be roasting his coffee for the first time. Gerald started Kambarare in 2011 by leasing 100 trees, and today has more than 1,000 planted across his family’s land. He is an exceptionally devoted and meticulous producer with a particular passion for processing. Gerald began processing this SL-28 separation by picking only ripe red cherries, which were then hand-sorted and floated to remove defects. After de-pulping, the parchment was fermented for 36 hours in plastic barrels in a cool, dark place, then washed and sorted again before being finished on raised drying beds for 14–21 days. Kamavindi was founded in 1958, when Peter's father, John Mbature, planted 100 trees, the maximum allowance for local Kenyans under colonial law. After Kenyan independence a few years later, Kamavindi began increasing its production, and today the farm has more than 10,000 trees.The family has also expanded its operations to include a washing station, an education and training center, and an exporting wing, Kamavindi Coffee Lab, which this season provided us with coffees from other estates across Kenya. This lot comes from Kamavindi's November harvest. Careful post-harvest processing included two distinct dry fermentation and washing stages, followed by meticulous sorting and floating, and slow, gradual drying on raised beds.
