One of the best feelings in life is when you put on a winter coat for the first time since the colder months only to discover $20 in the pocket. Nemba is kind of like that for us. We nearly forgot we'd even booked it, and, because of various and sundry shipping issues, it's only just hitting our menu now. We didn't hold much hope for this Red Bourbon from Kayanza, Burundi, but it's tasting exactly like we love our Burundis to taste: the creamy sweet/tart quality of apricots mixed with oolong tea and caramel flavors. Burundi has had many struggles in coffee production over the past few years, especially since the lack of economic prosperity puts many farmers in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't scenario. As in some areas of Kenya, Burundi's aging trees are producing less fruit, but many cannot be removed because of the lag time it takes for coffee saplings to mature (3-4 years). Getting coffee out of Burundi is certainly difficult, but as Nemba quite clearly shows us, it can be worth it.
