Luis Pedro Zelaya Aguirre’s Finca Candelaria is a stunner. This huge 1800 ha property is mostly a nature preserve at the base of the active Vulcan de Fuego— so close to the volcano that, on a clear day, you can see the gritty black streaks down the side of the volcano where the lava flowed in recent eruptions. The farm itself has about 280 ha at 1125-1370 masl planted in coffee of 6 different varietals: Bourbon 300, Caturra, Catuai, Villa Sarchi, Sarchimor, and Venecia. The coffee is dried and milled at Beneficio Bella Vista, which is owned by Luis Pedro’s son, Luis Pedro Zelaya Zamora. When we visited Candelaria this past winter, it was packed with people. The Zelaya family had arranged with a healthcare nonprofit to offer free health screenings to the farm workers are their families. It was a really special sight to see, and hundreds of men, women and children who otherwise would have difficulty accessing affordable health screenings were cared for at Finca Candelaria that day. We are so glad to work with producers who not only grow high quality coffee but who also care deeply about their community and environment.
